Start here.
I have written here since 2010 on evangelization, parish life, Scripture, apologetics, and the moral life. These six are the best place to begin.
Go Home and Live as Missionary Disciples
If your faith feels humdrum, you may not have entered the mission yet. A talk to men on what that asks of you.
Formed By Distraction
Eliot described minds pulled from one distraction to the next. We now carry that in our pockets. What is it forming in us?
What Is a Catholic?
A plain answer: who belongs to the Church Christ founded on the Apostles, and what holds that Church together.
Why You Need Your Men’s Group
Before asking whether men’s groups work, ask what problem they are meant to solve.
Why Protestants Are Becoming Catholic at My Parish
What draws evangelicals and mainline Protestants into the Catholic Church, as they told me in class.
How God Speaks in Human Words
The first of four articles on how the Bible is at once a human book and the Word of God.
Why is it so difficult to get into the Bible?
The Bible is not a book. It is a collection or library (Latin: biblia) composed of 73 books written over the course of centuries, through the hands of dozens of writers, redactors, and compilers, both men and women. These books are based on even older traditions passed down from generation to generation.
Man's Search for Meaning
Aristotle, the greatest of the Ancient Greek philosophers, taught that moral reasoning was based upon the telos, or a thing’s end or purpose. The telos tells us why it exists. Once we know the purpose of a thing, we can evaluate it. You cannot say if a thing is good or bad if you have no understanding of its purpose. For instance, if the pocket watch is too heavy to be comfortably carried and is a bit too large to fit in most pockets and does not keep time well, we would say that it is a bad watch. From these facts, we can form an evaluative judgment, but only if we know its telos or purpose.
Palm Sunday Meditation
A few days later those same crowds are crying out at Jesus, but instead of "Save us, Son of David!" They are crying out for his death, "Crucify him!" Ironically, the answer to their first cry "Hosanna!" is through their second cry, "Crucify him!" The reversal becomes salvific. It was by his stripes that we are healed.
COVID-19 is an opportunity for the Church
So let us have this social distancing, which is appropriate to slow down and spread out the acute impact of the virus, but let it not be a time to ignore the things of God, but to double-down on our own interior life. If we cannot, or should not, show up at Mass, then let us foster so great a devotion to our Lord that we remain present with him every moment of the day.
