My name is Michael Gormley, but people since 10th grade have called me "Gomer". I'm married to a momivore named Shannon, and have 4 kids that are 6 and under. (I don't sleep much.)
My goal is to connect with people of all ages using humor, knowledge and the grace of the Holy Spirit in order to evangelize and catechize those belonging to the new evangelization.
For my Undergraduate degrees, I double majored in Philosophy and Theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. I have a Master of Arts degree in Theology and Christian Ministry, which combines theological training with pastoral and catechetical formation.
CERTIFICATIONS & TRAINING
From the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston I have completed the Basic Certificate in Youth Ministry (BCYM) and received Safe Environment certification by VIRTUS. I also have updated my VIRTUS training with the refresher course, Keeping the Promise Alive in 2013.
For the Diocese of Austin in 2009 I completed their Ethics and Integrity in Ministry Child Safety Training program.
From Life Teen, Inc. I completed BASIC Training for High School and Middle School in 2006.
I spent 8 years in parish-based full time youth ministry. After graduating college I began work at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church as the Assistant Coordinator of Youth Ministry, and the head of Life Teen. I then went to Saint John Neumann Catholic Church in Austin, Texas to serve as the Director of Youth Ministry, in charge of all youth ministry programs: Life Teen, EDGE and Confirmation.
When we were about to have our first child, we thought it better to be located near family. At the same time I was discerning that God was calling me out of parish-based ministry and into full-time lay evangelization.
I have traveled all over the country and even as far away as Shanghai, China, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and His Church to teens, college students, young adults and parents. I have worked Confirmation Retreats, Adult Faith Formation programs, RCIA, Theology of the Body Seminars, Theology on Tap, workshops for parents, Diocesan Youth Conferences, Core Team retreats, spiritual retreats, summer camps and Eucharistic Congresses.
For three years I helped Life Teen Inc. develop their catechetical content for all of their summer camps (Arizona, Georgia, Massachusetts, Missouri). I have also helped put on Life Teen's annual Basic Training Conference, giving talks and leading workshops for new youth ministers and Core members.
For the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston I was appointed to the Committee for Curriculum Guidelines for Lifelong Learning. I was on the Subcommittee for High School Catechetical Guidelines. Our four person team was tasked with developing a systematic catechesis that matched the USCCB's "Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework"[pdf] for high school theology classes. The purpose of this work was to overhaul the 14 year old Archdiocesan guidelines in order present a coherent catechetical framework that covered an individual's entire lifespan. This ambitious project is still under development as each subcommittee's work is revised and final editing is being done.
